There have been numerous iconic — and expensive — royal engagement rings over the last century.

The American actress known as Grace Kelly before her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco, is among the group of royals who has donned a stunning jewel post-engagement. In fact, the late actress had two engagement rings, including her 10.48-carat jewel that inspired many modern-day versions, including Amal Clooney’s.

Queen ElizabethKate Middleton and Meghan Markle have also all worn stunning pieces of jewelry from their then-fiancé’s.

Each piece has something in common: the history of the stones, as well as the outrageous estimated worth. When it comes to sentimental value, Elizabeth and Meghan’s rings featured family jewels repurposed from other heirlooms, while Kate’s was passed down from the late Princess Diana.

Here’s everything to know about some of the most expensive royal engagement rings in history, including Princess Grace’s influential sparkler and Princess Diana’s sapphire, which was inherited by her children.

Kelly received two engagement rings from her husband, Prince Rainier of Monaco: an eternity band and an emerald-cut jewel from Cartier.

Rainier proposed to Kelly in 1955 with the infinity band, which featured heirloom red rubies and diamonds from his family.

However, Kelly’s second engagement ring from Cartier is regarded as one of the most expensive engagement rings in history. It’s become influential over the decades, inspiring numerous famous engagement rings, including those owned by Beyoncé and Clooney.

Rainier gave the actress her second ring while filming 1956’s High Society, her last movie before stepping into royal duties.

Kelly’s second ring from Cartier featured an emerald-cut 10.48-carat diamond and two bezel-set baguette side stones. Brides reported that the ring was listed at $4.06 million and is estimated to be worth $38.8 million today.

Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring is one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry in the royal family’s collection. After six months of dating, the then-Prince Charles and Diana announced their engagement in February 1981 and wed months later in July 1981.

Diana’s ring went against royal tradition because it was not custom made by repurposing jewels from heirloom pieces.

Instead, she and Charles chose a ring from a Garrard’s catalog, who were the former Crown Jeweller for the royal family. The stunning ring featured a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire set in 18-carat white gold, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds.

While the ring wasn’t custom-made, Garrard has said that the design for the ring was inspired by a brooch that Prince Albert had commissioned for Queen Victoria in 1840. The brooch, which was set in gold, featured a large sapphire that was surrounded by 12 round diamonds.

Following the death of Victoria in 1901, the brooch became an heirloom of the royal family, and was later worn on several occasions by Queen Elizabeth.

At the time of the proposal, the ring was valued at $37,500. However, Brides reported that the estimated value today has skyrocketed to approximately $520,000.

Prince William surprised Kate in 2010 when he proposed with his mother’s sapphire engagement ring. Following the death of Diana in 1997, William and his brother, Prince Harry, inherited her jewelry collection, including her famous engagement ring.

William’s choice in jewelry was sentimental, with the royal sharing at the time, “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so I thought it was quite nice because obviously, she’s not going to be around to share any of the fun and excitement of it all — this was my way of keeping her sort of close to it all.”

Prince Harry proposed to Meghan in November 2017 with a custom three-stone ring, which later became the most searched engagement ring in the world.

The custom-made jewel, which was designed with his grandmother’s regular jeweler Cleave & Company, is sentimental for several reasons.

The main stone on the ring is a large cushion-cut diamond sourced from Botswana, where Harry and Meghan spent time early on in their relationship. The ring also features family stones, using two jewels from his mother’s collection.

Since Meghan and Harry’s engagement, there has been one adjustment made to the ring. The original band was solid yellow gold but later was swapped out for a thin micro-pavé band.

InStyle reported that the estimated weight of the ring is 3.8-carats. Its estimated worth is between $300,000 and $350,000.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were famously married for more than 70 years before his death in 2021. The couple announced their engagement in 1947 after the late Duke of Edinburgh proposed with a ring he designed himself.

The Queen’s engagement ring was created by a London-based jeweler, Philip Antrobus Ltd, and featured 11 diamonds.

The sparkler included one large 3-carat diamond in the center, surrounded by 10 pavé diamonds, five on each side. The stones came from Philip’s mother’s tiara and were set in platinum.

While Brides reported that the ring was worth around $15,000 at the time, WWD estimates it is worth approximately $250,000 today.
